Gubbio, one of the oldest cities of Umbria, was founded by the Umbri with the name of Ikuvium and had contacts with the Etruscan civilization. It became a municipality during Roman times. After centuries of municipal freedom and of prosperous development, in the XIVth Century the city decided to donate itself to the Montefeltro family, dukes of Urbino, gaining a long period of tranquility. In 1624 Gubbio became part of the Papal State and now it is one of the most beautiful medieval cities of the world, wonderfully preserved with all its monuments.
